The Sports Season Injury Kit Every Parent Should Pack
Between practices, games, and the playground, an active kid's season comes with a predictable set of bumps and scrapes. A small, well-chosen kit in your bag means you can handle most of them on the spot — calmly and quickly.
What to pack
- Instant cold packs: the MVP of any sideline kit. An instant cold pack needs no freezer — snap it and it's cold, perfect for a fresh knock or twist.
- A reusable hot/cold compress for the days after (the PPK-100 does both).
- Bandages and wound care: assorted flexible bandages, gauze, tape, and antiseptic wipes.
- A support brace for a known weak ankle, knee, or wrist (browse braces).
- Extras: disposable gloves, a few safety pins, water, and an emergency contact card.
A stocked base like the Premium First Aid Kit covers most of this; just add the cold packs and any sport-specific braces.
The first-response rule for a fresh injury
For a new sprain, strain, or bump, think protect and cool in the first 1–2 days: stop the activity, apply a cold pack for 15–20 minutes (with a cloth layer — never ice directly on skin), and rest the area. Switch to gentle movement and, later, heat for lingering stiffness — our hot vs. cold guide walks through the timing.
Bumps to the head — take seriously
For any blow to the head, watch for headache that worsens, confusion, repeated vomiting, drowsiness, or unequal pupils. When in doubt, sit them out and get assessed — concussions don't always show right away.
When to head to a clinic
- Can't bear weight, or the joint "gives way" or looks deformed.
- Significant swelling, numbness, or pain that doesn't settle.
- A cut that won't stop bleeding or gapes open (may need closure).
Keep the kit restocked — the supplies you used last weekend are exactly what you'll want next time. Refill from our First Aid collection.
