How to Take an Accurate Blood Pressure Reading at Home
A home blood pressure monitor is only as accurate as the routine behind it. The good news: getting clinic-quality readings at home takes just a few simple habits.
Before you measure
- Rest for 5 minutes. Sit quietly β no phone, no TV, no conversation.
- Skip caffeine, exercise, and smoking for 30 minutes beforehand.
- Empty your bladder. A full bladder can raise readings by 10 mmHg or more.
Position matters more than you think
- Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor β no crossed legs.
- Rest your arm on a table at heart height.
- Place the cuff on bare skin, not over clothing, about 2β3 cm above the elbow crease.
- Use the right cuff size β a cuff that's too small reads high. If your upper arm is larger or smaller than the standard range, a properly sized replacement cuff is an easy fix.
The measuring routine
- Take readings at the same times each day β commonly morning (before medications) and evening.

- Stay still and silent during the measurement.
Common mistakes that skew results
Talking during measurement (+10 mmHg), an unsupported arm (+10 mmHg), crossed legs (+5β8 mmHg), and measuring right after climbing stairs are the usual culprits. If a reading seems unusually high, wait five quiet minutes and repeat β don't panic over one number.
